North Carolina Campaign Cracks Down on Speeders
Speeding is one of the leading causes of vehicle accidents. Driving too quickly can endanger the driver, passengers, and other vehicles on the roads. Speed is a factor in many accidents that result in injuries or fatalities. According to the North Carolina Department of Transportation, there were almost 400 deaths and thousands of injuries that were attributed to speeding last year. These accidents, injuries, and deaths are preventable. A new campaign is in place to crack down on North Carolina speeders.
Speeding Catches Up With You
The latest initiative from the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program is called “Speeding Catches Up With You”. This latest campaign focuses on bringing attention to speeding and educating the public on the consequences of speeding. The initiative is made in coordination with local law enforcement agencies across the state. The goal is to reduce traffic accidents, specifically addressing those caused by speeding. During the main part of the campaign, there will be more police officers out on the roadways watching for speeders. In addition, advertising is used to bring attention to driving safety.
The Consequences of Speeding Tickets
If you get a ticket for speeding, it can be more than just an inconvenience. If you are guilty of speeding you will have to pay a fine and will receive a number of points on your driver’s license. You will receive 1 point for driving 10 mph or less over the speed limit when the speed limit is 55 mph or less. You will receive 2 points for driving 10 mph or more over the speed limit when the limit is 55 mph or greater. You will receive 3 points for speeding in a school zone. If the situation rises to reckless driving, you will receive 4 points.
When you accumulate 12 points within a 3-year period, your license will be suspended. In addition to DMV points, the insurance company will also assign points, and your insurance rates may go up as a result. Fines for speeding tickets will vary depending on the severity of the infraction. For example, speeding in a school zone will cost $250. Also, there are court costs and fees that may be as much as $250. The cost for a typical speeding ticket will generally be about $200.
Should I Fight a Speeding Ticket?
If you receive a speeding ticket, you have the option to pay the ticket or fight it in court. If you pay the ticket, you are considered guilty, and the associated fees and points apply. In many cases, it makes sense to take the matter to court. It is helpful to seek legal representation to guide you through the process. At court, you may contest the ticket. Your lawyer will investigate the circumstances of the ticket and will assist with your defense. In some cases, the ticket may be dismissed, for instance, if the police officer fails to appear at the hearing. Having an attorney will help you achieve the best possible results.
